Simple Project Ideas

We've been working on a few simple mosaics to take to a holiday art/craft show which we do every year on Cape Cod. The people who come to the show are primarily looking for something to purchase to give as a present - something original but not too expensive. This year we've made some mirrors and coasters using stone. These are fairly simple, not so serious mosaics. But they're fun to do and most take only a few hours to complete. We hope you get some ideas and inspirations from these.

Mirror 1

The substrate for this mirror is one of those wonderful  12" mirror kits sold by Mosaic Smalti. The mosaic area is inset 1/4", perfect for mosaics. The materials used in this mirror - starting from the inside rim nearest to the mirror:

The selenite is larger than the pieces around it, giving the mirror a great 3-d texture. (Our supply of selenite is very limited.)

Mirror 2

This mirror uses Mosaic Smalti's 8" Mirror Kit. The substrate is painted with black acrylic paint. The materials -starting from the inside rim nearest to the mirror:

Marble & Slate Coasters

We've had a lot of fun making these simple & quick coasters.

For the substrate we got 4" x 4" slate tiles from Home Depot & Lowe's. For the mosaic we used

We used gray Thinset for the adhesive because the tiles, ammonite, and turquoise had different thicknesses. The thicker pieces could be squished into the Thinset more than the thinner ones. The marble was sealed before grouting and then sealed again after grouting.

We then glued a piece of felt on the bottom so that the piece could be used as a coaster. The slate gives each piece a nice substantial weight making it feel like a true stone mosaic.

Mirror 3

For the next few mirrors, we used the inexpensive mirror frames that you can get at Ikea. They are approximately 12" x 12". The materials used in this one starting from the mirror:

It's difficult to see the 3-d texture of the calcite crystals. Some of them stick up about an inch from the surface. We used Dap Kwik Seal to adhere the Picture Rock and Calcite to the substrate. You can apply enough to squish the stones into and, unlike Thinset, it dries clear. We used Weldbond glue for the rest of the mosaic.

Mirror 4

This mirror uses one of Mosaic Smalti's 8" Mirror Kits. (We love these frames!!!) The materials used for the mosaic, starting from the inside rim nearest to the mirror:

Mirror 5

This mirror uses one of Ikea's inexpensive mirror frames. The materials include:

I can't say that I'm really pleased with this mirror but I really like how the quartz, fluorite and amazonite play so well together.

Mirror 6

All the other mirrors have been fairly dark, so I though I should have one lighter mirror. Again, I used an Ikea frame. The materials include:

Mirror 7

Michael did this mirror using some sea shells. It's on one of Mosaic Smalti's 8" Mirror Kits. The materials include:
